The Office of the Vice President for Research and for National Laboratories (OVPRNL) at University of Chicago has an immediate opening for a Biological Safety Officer.
Job Description:
Serve as a Biological Safety Officer (ABSO) at the University of Chicago (UC). Assist in the development, coordination, implementation, management and supervision of a comprehensive laboratory biohazard control program and related services for the UC with a focus on laboratories situated on the Hyde Park Campus. Identify, evaluate and control biological hazards and related operational issues that may arise in university laboratories operating at Biosafety Level 2 (BSL2), Biosafety Level 3 (BSL3), Animal Biosafety Level 2 (ABSL2) and/or Animal Biosafety Level 3 (ABSL3). Work closely with Biological Safety Officers (BSOs), the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), the Select Agent Institutional Biosafety Committee (SAIBC), the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Animal Resources Center (ARC), the Office of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S), Divisional Laboratory Safety Specialists, UC faculty, staff, and students to coordinate services, review facilities, and provide appropriate safety training and technical support as necessary. Serve on UC’s emergency response team for situations involving biohazardous agents and/or other hazardous materials.
Education:
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in the basic life sciences, including but not limited to microbiology, public health, environmental health, industrial hygiene, occupational safety, or related field required.
Preferred:
Master’s or Ph.D. degree in the basic life sciences, including but not limited to microbiology, public health, environmental health, industrial hygiene, occupational safety, or related field preferred.
Certification strongly preferred, willingness to acquire certification as a Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP) or Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP) required.
Forty hour HAZWOPER certification strongly preferred.
Experience:
Required:
Five years of professional experience working either as an investigator conducting basic science research or in the management of laboratory safety programs, with experience at academic, hospital or biomedical research institutions required. Graduate program lab experience may serve as professional experience, depending upon the nature of this experience.
Preferred:
Experience or knowledge regarding biological safety including biology of pathogenic microorganisms (e.g. infectious dose, natural reservoirs, route of transmission, communicability, environmental stability, antibiotic sensitivities/resistance, sensitivities to disinfectants), recombinant DNA techniques and risk assessment, control and preventive methods, containment, decontamination, biomedical waste disposal, medical surveillance, injury prevention, emergency response, disaster planning, and employee training preferred.
Working knowledge of health education philosophy, goals and programs preferred.
