Pre-conference course:

Risk Assessment for Viral Vectors

This course will focus on how to perform risk assessments for risk the most popular viral vectors used in scientific research. Both in vitro and in vivo risk assessments will be covered. Less commonly used and emerging viral vector systems will also be introduced. The modification of viral vectors to alter the cellular tropism and safety is changing rapidly, so this course will introduce resources for learning about vectors as they emerge. This course will also include interactive exercises that will allow opportunities for application of concepts and benchmarking between institutions.

Instructor: Kara Sarchet, Ph.D., Office of Environmental Health and Safety, IUPUI

Dr. Sarchet is currently ABSO/ARO at IUPUI. Kara has a B.S. in Chemistry from Ball State University and a Ph.D. in Molecular Cell Biology from Washington University in St. Louis. Kara went on to postdoc at IUPUI and also has industry experience in cell manufacturing. Working full time in biosafety for the last four years, Kara has co-developed viral vector training programs and worked with local subject matter experts to promote viral vector safety.
