Open Position: Biohazard Coordinator @ St. Louis University

The Department of Comparative Medicine at St. Louis University has an immediate opening for a Biohazard Coordinator.

Job Description:

Under general direction, is responsible for ensuring all facets of compliance with all regulatory agencies as it applies to the use of bio-hazardous agents in animal-based research endeavors; is responsible for maintaining facility records, training documentation, and regulatory inspection material for the department; serves as the lead trainer in ABSL/BSL technical procedures; performs husbandry and technical requests in the ABSL facility.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of the BMBL & DCD regulation utilizing ABSL and Select Agents (SA).
  • Knowledge of laboratory animal procedures and skills in various techniques in dosing (tail vein, oral, intranasal, IP, SubQ), bleeding (facial, IV) and tissue collection working with multiple species exposed to bio hazardous agents.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills.  Ability to obtain vaccinations required to work with specific hazardous agents.
  • Ability to obtain vaccinations required to work with specific hazardous agents.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Trains CM husbandry staff, Principal Investigator (PI), and their staff in ABSL 2/3. {A{R. animal proficiency, how to perform injections safely in ABSL3 conditions, Allentown BCU training and also training on procedures related to specifically to Select Agents.
  • Performs husbandry duties on Select Agent and ABSL3 infected animals.
  • Provides technical services upon request and train other C(CM and SLU employees/students) on technical procedures.
  • Inspects all ABSL2/3 areas to ensure that they are in compliance with the IBC protocol, IACUC protocol, and any regulations (local, state and federal) that may apply.
  • Maintains records of all Comparative Medicine staff on Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP), Select Agent (SA), and ABSL3 training; maintains ATTEST and N95 fit testing result documents.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree; supplemented with five (5) years of related work experience. Must have previous experience in ABSL work.
