This presentation will include an overview of the Duke Infectious Disease Response Training (DIDRT) consortium, and services offered through this NIH/NIEHS-funded program.  Three types of trainings are available for worker populations at risk of exposure to infectious agents: awareness level, operations level, and train-the-trainer.  When possible, trainings are conducted in the actual workplace with emphasis on perfecting key safety procedures (e.g., donning and doffing PPE) based on site-specific risk assessments.  Adult learning techniques are utilized to actively engage each participant and ensure their understanding of the training content.  The DIDRT Learning Management System (LMS) tracks all training sessions and records.  Each trainee is granted password protected access to his own training transcript for long-term reference.  In addition, the LMS is used to deliver interactive online eLearning modules that supplement workplace trainings or provide refresher content updates.  Thus far, worker populations trained through DIDRT include: First Responders, Custodial Services, Travel/Air Transport Services, and Healthcare/Clinical Laboratories.

Presenter:

Becky McGirr is the safety manager at the Duke Human Vaccine Institute, and is also a trainer and e-learning course creator for the DIDRT program. Becky earned her Master’s Degree in Neuroscience from the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. She has over 10 years’ experience working in molecular biology research laboratories, and transitioned into the field of biosafety 4 years ago. Becky is a member of ABSA, serving on both the Distance Learning and Technical and Regulatory Review committees.
