Job Description:

The Division of Research Safety (DRS),, is seeking applicants for one to two Research Safety Professional positions to provide technical guidance to facilitate the safe conduct of research, teaching and related activities associated with the Urbana-Champaign campus.  DRS is committed to assisting campus units in identifying and managing biological, chemical and radiological hazards in order to reduce the risk of harm to the campus community and environment.  DRS partners with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, researchers, unit safety contacts and the campus community to promote an effective, world-class safety culture on campus.  DRS supports the safe use of biological, chemical and radiological materials on campus and facilitates the campus community’s understanding of and compliance with required regulations.

The Research Safety Professional will:

  • Work with other DRS team members and management in the development of programs, procedures, and resources that support the safe conduct of research, teaching and related activities.
  • Be responsible for the management of chemical, biological, and radioactive waste generated on campus.
  • Review protocols for the use of regulated and/or potentially hazardous material or equipment (e.g. isotopes, lasers, chemicals, biohazards).
  • Perform and document laboratory safety audits of facilities, operating procedures, and practices.
  • Consult on safety or compliance related issues with researchers, laboratory staff, safety contacts, and other campus safety and compliance professionals and committees.
  • Participate on DRS program and project teams.
  • Develop training and resource materials, and deliver training/information as needed; provide input as other team members develop materials and information.
  • Participate in DRS emergency response, providing information to campus and local emergency response agencies upon request.
  • Pursue professional development activities to expand/maintain technical expertise.
  • Network with colleagues at other institutions, and share program information via publications, presentations, and participation in professional associations.
  • Supervise hourly staff, students, and interns as needed.


Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, industrial hygiene, engineering, molecular biology, microbiology, cellular biology, biochemistry, genetics, physics, health physics, or a closely related field is required.

Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in field above or a closely related field is preferred.

Required Qualifications:

A minimum of two years of work experience in one or more of the following:

  • providing laboratory chemical safety/industrial hygiene support or working with chemicals in a laboratory and handling hazardous waste;
  • in a laboratory with recombinant DNA and/or biohazards (pathogens, biotoxins), or as a biosafety professional; or
  • in a radiation safety program in an academic, medical or nuclear institution, or using radiation and laser sources in an academic, medical, or nuclear institution subject to radiation safety program.

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team.  Familiarity with laboratory safety with an emphasis on chemical safety and risk assessment, or biosafety, or radiation safety. Effective oral and written communication skills.  An understanding of the research culture in a university setting.

Additional Information:

Appointment Status: Regular 100%-time academic professional appointment / 12-month service basis. Eligible for full University benefits package.   Salary commensurate with education and experience.  Start date as soon as possible after closing date.
