University of Iowa Office of the Vice President for Research Environmental Health & Safety Office has an immediate opening for Biosafety Specialist (Safety Specialist)
Job Description:
The University of Iowa Environmental Health and Safety Office is seeking an individual to serve as a Biosafety Specialist to assist in the implementation and assessment of activities related to biological safety at the University. This position will be responsible for managing the Biosafety Cabinet program, advising on corrective actions when performing laboratory audits, evaluating research projects for compliance, and may assist in the development and delivery of training programs related to biological and chemical issues.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences with an emphasis on microbiology, molecular biology or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 1-2 years practical experience in a research laboratory, understanding and working with recombinant DNA techniques, and using a biological safety cabinet (tissue culture hood).
- Demonstrates working level proficiency with data collection and report preparation.
- Demonstrates effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to interact with the research community; faculty, staff, students in a constructive and collaborative manner.
- Demonstrates effective organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience with Biosafety Level 2 or higher laboratory practices.
- Familiarity with animal protocols used in animal research.
- Familiarity with biosafety regulations and consensus standards.
- Familiarity with Access database.
- Experience with SharePoint.
Salary range: $40,202 to $45,000
