In fall 2011, two manuscripts, one from Dr. Yoshihiro Kawaoka at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the other from Dr. Ron Fouchier at the Erasmus Medical Center in The Netherlands, described research resulting in mammalian transmissible H5N1 influenza viruses. This started a cascade of events including two research moratoriums, the creation of two Federal Dual Use Research of Concern Policies being created, a through public debate, and finally a framework for funding agencies to review gain of function (GOF) research for potential funding. More recently, the first project, proposed by Dr. Kawaoka, underwent the Health and Human Services Framework review for GOF research and was recommended for funding. This webinar will focus on the observations and lessons learned by Rebecca Moritz, the Responsible Official and the Institutional Contact for DURC at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The focus will be on the evolution of her role beyond biosafety and biosecurity as well as take aways for a more proactive approaches.

An introduction to the principles of plant pathology
Similar to animals, plants are targeted by a variety of pathogenic organisms. Unlike animals however, fungal infections are the most damaging and contain the must numerous pathogenic species. In addition to fungal infections, plants also suffer extensively from bacteria, viruses, and nematodes. A better understanding of the life cycles, infection cycles, and survival structures of all of these organisms will help promote safe handling, research, and disposal of these highly destructive pathogens.

2018 MABioN Biosafety Symposium
Hosted by The Ohio State University - Columbus, OH
August 5-7, 2019
A two day conference for biosafety professionals and others involved in biosafety. The Symposium opens at 1pm on Monday and concludes after lunch on Wednesday. Presentations on various topics related to biosafety are planned for Monday afternoon, all day Tuesday and Wednesday morning. An optional half-day pre-conference workshop will be held Monday morning, and an optional facility tour on Wednesday afternoon. Come and network with biosafety professionals in the Midwest area and learn and share information about biosafety. Registration will open in June. Call for papers will be open soon and closes May 15th.
Symposium registration includes:
- Breaks on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
- Lunch on Tuesday and Wednesday
- Dinner Reception on Tuesday Night
- Optional Wednesday afternoon facility tour

In October 2018, the Office of Research Safety (ORS) at the University of Chicago conducted a safety-oriented, team-based scavenger hunt, in part to promote National Biosafety Month. By gamifying this endeavor, we hoped to achieve the following goals: 1) Build awareness of ORS roles and responsibilities; 2) Promote ORS functions; 3) Provide fun and memorable education; and 4) Generate good-will and increase buy-in from researchers.

A Change in Climate Can Lead to a Better Safety Culture
Laboratory animal research presents unique hazards to worker safety. Many times, unsafe conditions are not discovered until an injury occurs. In most cases, the injury could have been prevented had someone informed the staff or safety team of an at-risk condition or a near miss. To cultivate the safety climate in animal facilities and encourage proactive rather than reactive reporting, laboratory animal resource (LAR) groups should partner with the safety, health, and environment (SHE) groups to take a behavioral-based safety (BBS) approach. A primary focus is to measure the performance of culture, rather than the absence of injury. This presentation will look at implementing BBS from both a Safety and LAR management level as well as how BBS can impact employees from all levels.
