FINAL CALL! Jun 7, 2019 | MABioN Webinar - Observations and Lessons Learned from the Eye of the Storm
In fall 2011, two manuscripts, one from Dr. Yoshihiro Kawaoka at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the other from Dr. Ron Fouchier at the Erasmus Medical Center in The Netherlands, described research resulting in mammalian transmissible H5N1 influenza viruses. This started a cascade of events including two research moratoriums, the creation of two Federal Dual Use Research of Concern Policies being created, a through public debate, and finally a framework for funding agencies to review gain of function (GOF) research for potential funding. More recently, the first project, proposed by Dr. Kawaoka, underwent the Health and Human Services Framework review for GOF research and was recommended for funding. This webinar will focus on the observations and lessons learned by Rebecca Moritz, the Responsible Official and the Institutional Contact for DURC at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The focus will be on the evolution of her role beyond biosafety and biosecurity as well as take aways for a more proactive approaches.

Today, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) finalized a proposal to amend the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules(NIH Guidelines) to streamline the oversight of gene therapy research.
Similar to animals, plants are targeted by a variety of pathogenic organisms. Unlike animals however, fungal infections are the most damaging and contain the must numerous pathogenic species. In addition to fungal infections, plants also suffer extensively from bacteria, viruses, and nematodes. A better understanding of the life cycles, infection cycles, and survival structures of all of these organisms will help promote safe handling, research, and disposal of these highly destructive pathogens.

In October 2018, the Office of Research Safety (ORS) at the University of Chicago conducted a safety-oriented, team-based scavenger hunt, in part to promote National Biosafety Month. By gamifying this endeavor, we hoped to achieve the following goals: 1) Build awareness of ORS roles and responsibilities; 2) Promote ORS functions; 3) Provide fun and memorable education; and 4) Generate good-will and increase buy-in from researchers.
