Job Description:

The University of Iowa Environmental Health and Safety Office is seeking an individual to serve as a Biosafety Coordinator to assist in the implementation and assessment of activities related to biological safety at the University. This position will be responsible for performing evaluations/audits in laboratories related to biological, chemical, and radiological hazards, advising on corrective actions and evaluating research projects for compliance.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences with an emphasis on microbiology, molecular biology or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Practical experience in a research laboratory, performing procedures and techniques as outlined in a research protocol. (Typically 6 months – 1 year)
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of and experience with recombinant DNA techniques.
  • Demonstrates working level proficiency with data collection and report preparation.
  • Demonstrates effective communication; written, verbal and organizational skills including the ability to interact in a professional manner with faculty, staff, students in a constructive and collaborative manner.
  • Proficient in computer software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and various database systems.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Familiarity with NIH Guidelines and biological safety regulations and consensus standards.
  • Familiarity with animal protocols used in animal research.
  • Knowledge of University policies, procedures and regulations.

Salary range:  $37,313 to $40,000
