Job Description:

The BRI Biocontainment Research Technologist/Laboratory Coordinator will coordinate biocontainment laboratory services for researchers at the Kansas State University Biosecurity Research Institute (KSU BRI), a biosafety level 3 and biosafety level 3Ag biocontainment research facility. This entails coordinating activities with research personnel, BRI Biosafety Officer, Biosafety Specialists, and Operations personnel, and the KSU Department of Environmental Health and Safety. This position will report issues with standard equipment or procedures to the Operations and Biosafety group for proper repair and corrective actions, and recommend changes that can improve the logistical support of the facility based on their knowledge of task and time management.

Job Responsibilities:

Maintain BRI work management system that tracks inventory and generates preventative maintenance tasks on a weekly, monthly, and yearly basis. Determine long and short term inventory needs based on research protocols, inspection protocols and industry standards. Input calibration, certification, decontamination, and maintenance records into management system. Coordinate use of labs through meetings with researchers and administrative staff. Setup and stock laboratories with basic supplies and materials. Ensure that locker rooms are stocked with laboratory clothing, personal protective equipment and basic supplies. Purchasing duties include ordering supplies and equipment. Provide logistical support inside the biocontainment area. Point of contact for research Principal Investigators, including coordination of research space assignments with Animal Suite Supervisor and BRI Biosafety Staff with consideration for research needs, safety and security requirements (laboratory check-in/check-out program); coordinating between researchers and maintenance staff to schedule and facilitate biocontainment area repairs and annual facility validation testing and preventative maintenance. Initiates or assigns work orders using the BRI work management system as necessary. Responsible for maintaining current research project status information in the BRI Research Project Database, including required regulatory documentation. Set up new projects in the BRI Research Database and maintain up-to-date records. Add personnel, project details, reserve rooms, ensure all permits and required documents are uploaded to each project and are current, contact appropriate parties to ensure all items on Start-Up Checklist are completed before work can begin. Maintain current activity log for all research rooms as required by federal regulators.

Oversee decontamination of all materials exiting the biocontainment area. Coordinate autoclave validation and sterilization efficacy testing program. Sterilize biological waste out of the biocontainment areas. Advise users and monitor proper disposal streams for all hazardous waste generated at the BRI, including biological, chemical, sharps and radioactive materials, in coordination with the BRI Biosafety Staff and KSU Department of Environmental Health and Safety. Decontaminate and coordinate laundering of laboratory clothing and towels. Specialize in gas decontamination methods typically used at BSL-3 and BSL-3Ag, which include vaporized hydrogen peroxide and chlorine dioxide applications. Proficient at cycle development, cycle optimization and validation. Able to troubleshoot multiple pieces of decontamination equipment. Stay current with changing practices and procedures and update SOPs and reporting forms as necessary. Coordinate required biological verification of effluent decontamination system and tissue digester. Coordinate with the city of Manhattan environmental compliance manager, environmental specialist, waste water treatment plant superintendent, and College of Veterinary Medicine for proper compliance of the memorandum of understanding for tissue digester draining. Perform proper sampling, packaging, and shipping of tissue digester content samples. Perform weekly, monthly, yearly, etc., preventative maintenance tasks. Respond to and assist with containment and clean-up of biohazardous material spills. Recognize safety hazards and use proper procedures to mitigate risk to self and/or others.

Assist with hands-on training of new and returning researchers in the containment area, to include working in laboratories and BSL-3Ag spaces, entry and exit procedures, waste handling, preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment. Ability to coordinate and oversee work with outside contractors for annual certification of HEPA filtered equipment (biosafety cabinets, supply and exhaust HEPAs, centrifuges, etc.) throughout the building. Meticulous record keeping and reporting due to government inspection agency’s requirements. Ability to work with researchers, technicians, consultants, etc. from outside entities such as other universities and government entities such as the USDA, CDC and DHS.

Required Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Associate degree and
  • Two or more years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in biological or chemical sciences
  • 4 years research, teaching or diagnostics lab experience with emphasis in microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, public health or related field

Other Requirements:

  • Valid Driver’s license (upon employment)
  • Ability to receive a favorable background check from US Gov’t Level III Biocontainment experience
  • Working knowledge of regulatory requirements for biological materials
  • Dealing with relevant federal, state, and local regulatory agencies (DHS, DHHS, DOD, OSHA, USDA)
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
