Chesapeake Area Biological Safety Association (ChABSA) Virtual Technical Series Seminar: Evolving Design Philosophies for Containment Laboratories- Nov 16, 2021 5-6:30PM ET

The Chesapeake Area Biological Safety Association (ChABSA) is pleased to once again offer remote viewing of our Virtual Technical Series Seminars this year to all ABSA affiliates.
“Evolving Design Philosophies for Containment Laboratories.”
Abstract:
Evolution of design is ordinarily a slow process of change from one form or level to a better or higher level. We are living in a unique period of time and are challenged to match containment laboratory capacity with the needs and wants of the industry. In this presentation, Mr. Traum describes how a team of talents must work together to build an operational and sustainable laboratory. Mr. Traum gave this presentation at the 2021 Future Laboratory Innovation and Development Summit Forum in Shanghai, China.

Bio:
Mr. Theodore J. Traum, PE, DGCP, CCP has over thirty-five (35) years of experience as a mechanical engineer, industrial engineer and project manager with a focus in high and maximum containment laboratories (BSL-3 and BSL-4), biomedical facilities, hospitals and research facilities. In these roles, he consults with clients and oversees laboratory planning, programming, commissioning, validation and third-party certification activities for significant biocontainment, laboratory, vivarium, safety and health projects. He has led a wide range of projects covering regulatory development, standard development, enforcement investigations, targeting, data management and information technology. His work spans both mobile and stationary sources, including laboratories, pilot plants, hospitals, and oil and gas producers.
Following the September 11, 2001 attacks, Mr. Traum received a considerable influx of biosafety and biocontainment projects to combat bioterrorism. Mr. Traum focused engineering and design efforts towards developing a certification program for biocontainment laboratories, their design, construction, operation, biosafety consultation and maintenance through World BioHazTec (WBHT). Being one of only a few experts in the United States with a significant level of expertise and previous success in niche projects for the healthcare and research laboratories, Mr. Traum became sought after nationally and internationally as the premier consultant for oversight, management, commissioning and certification of Biocontainment Facilities.
As lead principal of WBHT, Mr. Traum serves as our lead SME on environmental data systems and specializes in data analysis and risk assessment design, offering creative solutions to present information to enhance user capabilities, understand results and implement occupational safety and health solutions. Multiple organizations and government agencies have sought Mr. Traum’s expertise for environmental and occupational safety and health regulations and policies including:
Author of the National Institutes of Health, “BSL-3 Certification Requirements and Checklist”
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and National Institutes of Health Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories
World Health Organization Laboratory Safety Manual
ANSI Z9.14: Testing and performance verification methodologies for ventilation systems for Biological Safety Level 3 (BSL-3) and Animal Biological Safety Level 3 (ABSL-3) facilities
NIH, Office of Research Facilities, “Design Requirements Manual”
United States Pharmacopeia <797> Pharmaceutical Compounding – Sterile Preparations (Expert Committee)
Promulgation of the Singapore Biological Agents and Toxins Act
In recent years, Mr. Traum has managed contracts and projects to provide technical guidance on performing HVAC commissioning, risk assessments and/or third-party certification at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration White Oak BSL-3 Laboratory; National Institutes of Health Main Campus and Integrated Research Facilities Buildings; Pfizer; Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; Johns Hopkins Institutions; Merck; Shell Oil and Gas; and universities throughout the country and the world. Mr. Traum received the ChABSA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021.
