Job Description

The University of Missouri Laboratory for Infectious Disease Research (LIDR) is a Regional Biocontainment Laboratory located on the MU-Columbia campus. LIDR is a critical resource for University of Missouri faculty and collaborating scientists who perform research on infectious diseases and is part of our nation’s effort to protect public health.

Manage the operations of the Biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) and Animal Biosafety Level 3 (ABSL-3) containment facilities. Provide technical guidance to faculty and staff regarding facilities, work practices and equipment for protection of personnel, laboratories and environment from biological hazards in accordance with applicable University policies and state and federal laws.

Duties

Develop and implement emergency response procedures for incidents involving bio hazardous agents and materials. Respond (on call) to hazardous materials incidents as appropriate.

Determine if/when facility decontamination is needed and the type of decontamination. Coordinate decontamination activities.

Inspect research facilities for compliance with regulations and University policies and procedures pertaining to use, handling, and disposal of potential biohazards and recombinant DNA.

Participate with DEHS and other emergency responders in planning and implementation of regular incident response drills and exercises.

Review plans for laboratory renovation of existing facilities to assure adherence to current Biosafety and biosecurity practices.

Regularly review and update Facility Operations & Management Manual in consultation with appropriate health and safety offices.

Provide compliance reporting as required by health and safety offices.

Collaborate with LIDR Director to review experiment design, protocols and procedures and conduct risk assessments for select agent research.

Review research grant applications, proposals, and activities involving hazardous materials and recombinant DNA to ensure safe practices.Advise on and assure compliance with all federal, state and institutional regulations and guidelines.

Coordinate with the LIDR Operations Commmittee and the Responsible Official to enforce all federal Select Agent Regulations.

Work in conjunction with the LIDR Director to provide biological safety training for faculty, staff and students and approve access of trained personnel to use facilities.Train facility personnel on safe work practices in a BSL/ABSL-3 laboratory in accordance with applicable federal, state, granting agency regulations and institutional policies and procedures.

In coordination with the LIDR Operations Committee and appropriate health and safety offices, investigate accidents in regard to Biosafety issues and develop corrective action plans.

Work with building users to identify individuals for participation in the MU Occupational Health and Safety Program.

Salary

$62,000 – $118,752

Grade: GGS 12

Monday – Friday, 8 am to 5 pm with occasional nights and weekends

Minimum Qualifications

A Master’s degree in related/ relevant area and at least 4 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary. Additional degree and licensures as required by state/federal laws

Preferred Qualifications

In addition, successful candidate should have working knowledge of NIH and CDC guidelines.Applicants should have excellent verbal, written, computer and interpersonal skills.Access to the LIDR is strictly controlled, limited to a small number of MU faculty, staff and students. Access to the LIDR requires initial and ongoing comprehensive training in handling biohazards as well as a requirement for a security background check.
