The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center is seeking to fill a full-time Biosafety Specialist II position.

The DDPSC Biosafety Specialist is responsible for supporting the research activities of internal laboratories and external clients. The Biosafety Specialist will provide technical support to the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Department and will act as a liaison between research and safety. This position will be specifically involved in supporting the biosafety function of the EHS Department. The ideal candidate will have some experience supporting a safety department in a research setting, be able to manage a variety of tasks with different levels of complexity and have strong organizational and communication skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Advises Danforth Center employees regarding safety procedures and protocols to ensure the safety of the researchers and support staff based on regulatory compliance with local, state and federal agencies.
  • Develops and delivers new employee biosafety training, as well as other biosafety related training/content as assigned.
  • Performs routine biosafety lab inspections and field research site audits, ensuring compliance with USDA and NIH safety standards.
  • Participates in USDA inspections and assists in deficiency mitigation.
  • Performs risk assessments when lab work involves USDA regulated or pathogenic organisms and recommends mitigation controls.
  • Primary EHS contact for biological waste.
  • Assists in continued development of IRB review process as it relates to the Education Outreach Department human subjects research projects.
  • Supports efforts to develop a stewardship program.
  • Supports efforts to continuously improve our containment facilities.
  • A successful candidate will display a positive, service-oriented attitude and work well within an interdisciplinary group.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Working knowledge of NIH Guidelines and USDA regulations preferred.
  • Strong science background or education especially in biology or related field preferred.
  • Ability to detect biohazardous conditions in the workplace.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail.
  • Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills.
  • Basic Microsoft Office programs and ability to quickly learn and support other software systems.
  • Ability to work well in a team setting.

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Biology degree or equivalent preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience supporting a biosafety program, preferably in a laboratory research environment.
